From OD&D book 3 "Underworld and Wilderness Adventures" p24:

PLAYER/CHARACTER SUPPORT AND UPKEEP: Player/Characters must pay Gold Pieces equal to 1 % of their experience points for support and upkeep, until such time as they build a stronghold. If the stronghold is in a wilderness area all support and upkeep costs then cease, but if it is in a village or town not controlled by the player/character then support and upkeep payments must continue.

Common Tavern//Inn Expenses, Base Cost (one person)

Poor Common Merchant Upper Class

Meal 1 cp 1 sp 2 gp 10 gp Room, per night 1 sp* 1-5 gp** 10 gp 50 gp Ale, pint 1 cp 5 cp 2 sp 1 gp Wine, glass — 1 sp 1 gp 10 gp Wine, bottle — 8 sp 8 gp 80 gp Loaf of bread — 2 cp 1 sp 5 sp Stable, 1ani./night 3 cp 2 sp 1 gp 5 gp (Includes equivalent feed)

*Sleeping in tavern common room. **Shared room. Private room 5 gp.

Note: Prices for average town. For villages, Upper Class not available, Merchant price doubles, Common price halved. For cities, Upper Class price doubles. If no competition, all prices probably go up, maybe by a factor of 10 or more! For Royalty style accommodations, meals, etc., multiply the Upper Class by 10 to 20, as suits your culture.

Derived from guesstimates and my own “feel” as to what seems right. For the record, a “Poor” meal is a small bowl or cup of unsalted broth, maybe with some old meat in it and last week’s bread. It sucks to be poor.
